A Night of Laughter and Luxury: My VIP Experience at the Savanna Cider Presents Showmax Laugh Africa Day 1
The Drive to Sandton City on Friday the 5th of April was a bit rough because I wasn’t warned of the sheer level of traffic in the Sandton area around 5 pm. I don’t think I’ve ever driven to Sandton around that time in the many years I’ve lived in Gauteng. None the less, when I got to the venue, I had to park at the MichaelAngelo Hotel Parking which I wasn’t aware goes a deep as 8 floors down. Friday was busy hey, but I loved the hustle and bustle of the sparkly night and the light fairy atmosphere of what was about to happen the Savanna and Showmax Laugh Africa Comedy Special. And the best part of this night must be the excitement of being invited as the VVIP Guest with Savanna Cider. Being invited as a VVIP guest to the illustrious Savanna Cider Presents Showmax Laugh Africa, Day 1, I felt a rush of anticipation, ready to dive headfirst into what promised to be an unforgettable experience.
I thought I had nailed my outfit choice for the event, rocking a cute little black dress from YDE. But then reality hit me like a ton of bricks when I realized how many times, I’d have to tackle those pesky escalators. Yep, my short dress suddenly seemed like a risky move. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m no stranger to wearing short dresses. I know the drill – got to keep an eye on the length, got to master the art of staying classy even in a mini. But without a handbag to shield my modesty, I knew I’d have to get creative. Picture this: me, strategically using my hands to ward off any unwanted stares as I navigate the treacherous escalators to the Savanna cider Lounge. It was like a high-stakes game of fashion chess, and I was determined to come out on top. After all, nothing was going to stop me from making my grand entrance at the Savanna Cider Lounge and then enjoying myself at the Savanna Showmax taping of the roast of Minnie Dlamini.
As if the short dress dilemma wasn’t enough, fate decided to throw another curveball my way. Just as we stepped into the venue, disaster struck – the strap on my cute pink suede shoe decided to call it quits. Panic mode, activated! But fear not, for I am a seasoned fashionista, always prepared for the unexpected. Thank goodness for the mini-wardrobe stashed away in my car – every woman’s secret weapon, if you ask me. With a quick change of shoes, crisis averted… almost. Sure, the broken strap wasn’t the end of the world, but let’s be real – strutting around a high-class event with a busted shoe? Not exactly my idea of a fashion statement. So, without missing a beat, my friend Shina and I embarked on a casual stroll back to the Michelangelo Towers parking lot.
And just like that, with a swift shoe swap, I was back in business. Enter the Kurt Geiger heels with the rainbow straps! Looking back, I can’t help but chuckle at the shoe saga. In hindsight, maybe it was fate’s way of nudging me towards the shoes that were destined to steal the show. Those Kurt Geiger heels were meant to be the stars of the evening, and boy, did they shine bright. So, here’s to wardrobe malfunctions and unexpected twists – because sometimes, they lead us straight to our fashion triumphs. And as for me? Well, I’ll be strutting my stuff in those rainbow strap heels like I own the runway. After all, a little wardrobe hiccup is no match for a determined fashionista.
Now, let’s talk about the event itself – pure magic! Picture yourself at the Savanna lounge, surrounded by laughter, music, and good vibes. We danced, we ate, we drank – it was an evening to remember. The Roast of Minnie Dlamini, where laughter was the main dish and our panellists the prime targets. We had the likes of Trevor Gumbi, Shahan Ramkissoon, Celeste Ntuli, Lasizwe Dambuza, Penny Lebyane, Da L.E.S, Siv Ngesi, and Robert Marawa in the hot seat, ready to take some friendly fire.
Now, some jokes flew like playful arrows, while others hit a little too close to home – especially those aimed at Da L.E.S and his legendary all-white parties. It was like a comedic game of darts, with Trevor Gumbi’s past struggles and his ex-wife Lucille’s extravagant wedding serving as prime targets. But when the tables turned, and it was Gumbi’s time to dish it out, he took everyone by surprise with his off-script antics. As for Dambuza, whose rise to fame started on the humble streets of YouTube, he faced his fair share of jabs but gave back as good as he got. It was a comedic showdown for the ages, with each panelist bringing their A-game to the roast.
But the night was long, and nothing lasts for ever. But quickly, before I sign off! After months of being ‘benched’ by sports injuries, slipping into heels again felt like reuniting with old friends. But after a few hours of strutting my stuff in those Kurt Geigers, I kicked them off as soon as we exited the building and I hit the road barefoot. Ah, the sweet relief! A massive shoutout to Luagh Africa, Showmax and Savanna Cider for the unforgettable night, and a special thank you to Tshegofatso Nkubone at Grey PR for all the love and support. Here’s to many more laughs and memorable moments to come!
