A story about desire in a black dress

I got up from the incredible dinner I was having with a young man across the candle-lit table. I had drank just enough to get my head buzzing and a feeling of euphoria had settled in. There was still Prosecco left in the flute. I took the last sip, put the flute back down on the table, and turned away from my date to face the direction of the female toilets. I noticed some stares across the room. I tried to ignore them because they made me a bit uncomfortable. I brushed off the uncomfortable feeling as I reminded myself that I’m a gorgeous woman and people will stare at me once in a while. And it is ok. To tell you the truth, what really got me uncomfortable was the stares from some of the men in the room who were seated across from their dates. I felt it was so disrespectful to do that to someone you may have practically begged to come to dine with you. But such is life.

I used the ladies, washed then wiped my hands with the paper towels and glanced at myself before leaving the bathroom. I looked amazing. My dress was perfect. I was wearing a black bodycon dress with mesh black sleeves that showed off my arms. The dress had a low neckline which did its job of broadcasting my cleavage. My body is small at the waist. A bit like a figure 8, According to some of my friends. I enjoyed their compliments, my friends. But didn’t enjoy strangers when they looked at me with wondering, bewildered and peeping eyes. But I understood it. I took one last glance at the bathroom mirror and walked out to join my date.

As I walked towards him, I noticed him looking at EVERYONE else other than me. He looked around the room with a somewhat proud face.  As I got close to the table, he got up and gently pushed my chair in for me as I sat down. He then looked at me and said, darling, you look wonderful tonight.

You weren’t even looking at me, I said, mastering a shy mutter of frustration. He then responded with, you know that you are gorgeous, but how everyone else looks at you is a marvel. I already know I’m with the most beautiful girl in the room. I looked at everyone else looking at you and that made my heart flutter. I feel so lucky, he continued, as he took my hand and kissed it.

As I think about that beautiful night out in a black dress designed for a goddess, I think back to the day I wore this orange Mini dress and the attention I got from simply walking 5 meters. It felt like I was the object of desire for most of the guys who got even a slight glimpse of me that sunny afternoon. And the men in cars driving past didn’t shy away from showing it by hooting or screaming, be mine, as they slowed down to take a better look without causing an accident.

There was a lot of traffic on the street where Kagiso, Thabang and I took these images. The flattering remarks were cute at first until they became intolerable. And while I don’t mind being desired by all men, it comes at a cost. The cost is the unwanted desire from perverts.
