Black panther is highest grossing superhero movie of all time: here are a few reasons why – Ever since “being woke” I choose to watch movies that represent humanity, not only one specific race. The Black Panther movie broke records being the highest grossing super hero movie of all time. Now that’s a big first… I always knew that if a movie has cultural representation of different cultures, it will succeed because all cultures would want to watch it. I was right. Gone are the days when we were OK with just seeing one race represented in movies. The world has become so small that we want to know more about our neighbors.
Why the Black Panther is the highest grossing superhero movie of all time can be compared to magazine trends i.e the rise and fall of print publication. A few years ago, I wanted to start an online magazine. It never materialized, I started a Blog instead, but I did my research anyway.
Print media is bleeding but, from a few, only one magazine from those distributed in South Africa is still growing exponentially. That magazine is Cosmopolitan. Cosmopolitan magazine is mostly about sexuality, fashion and fun, being fearless but when you turn the pages, the Cosmopolitan magazine has images popping out of it of inter-racial couples, black friends with Asians, white friends, mixed raced pics, diverse women spear-heading beauty campaigns etc. In general, Cosmopolitan is full of diversity. No one is benched.
Someone said recently that the world expects Americans to include every single race on the planet in its movies and that that is not possible, with most Americans or USA citizens being Caucasian. He went on to expand that because the United States is majority white, their movies should be a resemblance of that majority. He even said that South African movies are a good representation of South African majorities and minorities, which is true. There are more blacks than whites in South Africa films but then again, it depends on what channel you watching.
But, let me remind you that we mostly watch American movies, our news comes mostly from America and the series on TV are more that 60% American, excluding some British ones. Because America doesn’t only cater to Americans, their movies should represent such. If South African movies where consumed by the entire world, we would make movies to fit the world consumer, but that’s not the case (we trying though).
I decided a long time ago that I’d watch movies that ‘ had me in them’ and this mentality is why Black Panther is highest grossing superhero movie of all time. EVERYBODY wants to watch it because it includes everybody. I’d watch movies where I could see myself and I’d relate. I honestly do that. But more than relatability, I want to be educated on different cultures, ethnicity, languages and food and what better way than thru visual stimulation.
The only movies I’d watch with a full white cast are horror movies, because we all know that unless it’s voodoo, no black person is going to check why there is a weird noise from the basement at 3AM, when he lives alone and no black person is going to investigate why there’s strange lights in the cornfield at 1 AM. Then we sitting in the cinema, screaming at the screen at the #stereotype blonde girl, saying, no… Don’t go, stay in bed!! But she always ends up dead cause Freddie killed her. No mam… a black guy will call the police and stay in bed. Lol more #Stereotyping
Anyway… what makes the black panther such a great movie and why Black panther is highest grossing superhero movie of all time, it’s because Black Panther is more than just a movie, it’s a ray of hope. It dislodges the myth that the world is for a certain culture while the rest of us play catch up. From the confident Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) to the villainous Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger) and even our very own Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia). Black panther is highest grossing superhero movie of all time because it goes to show that we don’t always need to look to the west for help, and we don’t always have to look like the west with our skin tones. Wakanda resisted the colonial rule and has thrived in the world-class nation it is today.
It was about time Black panther is highest grossing superhero movie of all time. Diversity creates capital. Gone are the days where we would be forced to watch a racially biased, none representative, culturally ignorant movie because of lack of options. I walk out and dont look back. We don’t live alone and movies should represent that.
Movies that have really pushed the diversity bar and that prove that diversity works, include movies like The Great Wall, Rouge One, Magnificent 7, Star Trek, Suicide Squad, The Fast and the Furious, Mad Max, Fury Road, Pacific Rim, etc.
